(Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh's US Attorney and FBI Special Agent in Charge are in the Netherlands today announcing indictments against operators of an international cyber-crime network.
US Attorney Scott Brady says ten defendants in five countries are charged with using malware called Goz-Neem to steal millions of dollars from more than 40,000 businesses around the world.
The investigation started in Pittsburgh in 2016 with investigation of the Avalanche malware network.
“A number of these cyber criminals are being brought to justice in court in the Ukraine, Maldova, Georgia and the United States,” said Brady.
Special Agent in Charge Bob Jones along with Brady are at the Hague with prosecutors from several countries.
Brady explained what the case is about.
“This case is about both dismantling and disrupting the infrastructure that facilitates cybercrime and identifying and holding accountable the criminals behind these campaigns,” said Brady.
Two local businesses, Nord-Lock of Carnegie and Protech of New Castle were victims in that case.
