PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The traditional Pittsburgh Labor Day parade is being canceled this year amid the worldwide pandemic, but have many other events planned aimed at helping the community.
The nearly 40 year old event The Allegheny County Labor Council has put on the largest Labor Day parade in the United States but this year President Darrin Kelly says it would be "impossible" to put on the parade.
He says up to 200,000 people participate in the parade and they march shoulder to shoulder.
It would be "Impossible to practice physically distancing," Kelly told KDKA Radio.
While the parade isn't able to go on as planned, a weekend of service is being organized.
Kelly says the two days leading up to the September 7 holiday will feature volunteers beautifying area parks and cleaning up in front of schools so students have a nice area to go back to when the return to classrooms.
In addition, the council is teaming up with the Greater Pittsburgh Area Community Food Bank for a food drive to help those in need on Monday, September 7. Kelly says he has asked all local unions to make food donations.
A blood drive to help the community's frontline workers is also in the works.
Other events will be virtual including teaching reading story about the importance of labor and its history.
