PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Dormont has announced the community’s pool will not open in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Post-Gazette reports during a council meeting on Monday night, members unanimously approved keeping the pool closed for the year, saying it would be too dangerous to open it up.

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the Dormont Pool and that celebration will be moved into 2021.

Borough officials said they considered delaying the opening but that idea was dismissed.

Dormont Pool is one of the largest in the area.

On Monday, Allegheny County announced they have not made a decision if and when its pools will open but that they are hiring lifeguards so they can be trained and ready to go when pools can safely reopen.

Many communities have already canceled their Memorial Day festivities around the area as the pandemic continues.
