Raccoon

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Allegheny County Health Department has confirmed the first case of rabies in 2020.

A raccoon picked up in White Oak near Jacks Run Road and White Oak Park tested positive for the disease.

Raccoons can emerge early from winter hibernation in warmer weather.

The Health Department reminds people to watch for unusual behavior in wild animals and make sure pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations.

Anyone who sees an animal acting strange is asked to call the Health Department at 412-687-2243.

2019 saw 25 animals test positive for rabies including 18 raccoons, five bats and two cats.
