PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Frustrations mounting for people who filed for unemployment benefits more than a month ago and have yet to see any money.

Labor and Industry Secretary Jerrey Oleksiak says they're doing what they can to eliminate the backlog.

"Let me start by saying they will be made whole. Any delays will not impact their benefits," said Oleksiak. "We are frustrated as well."

The delays are caused not lonely by the influx of claims but also by an antiquated system.

"Our system being 40 years old was not designed to take wages higher than $100,000 for the year," said the department's Susan Dickinson.

Those must be processed by hand with new equipment expected to be online in October.

New figures show 1.65 million workers have filed for unemployment in Pennsylvania since mid-March. $3.5 billion in benefits have been paid out.
