(Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association have published today recommendations to cut the number of sugary drinks children consume.
For the first time, the AAP is recommending an excise tax on sugary drinks, where the price of the drinks would go up and the revenue would go toward reducing health and socioeconomic disparities.
Along with the AHA, they are also recommending limits on marketing to children and financial incentives for purchasing healthier beverages.
For instance, they would like federal nutrition assistance programs to ensure access to healthy food and beverages.
According to a press release, children are consuming an average of over 30 gallons of sugary drinks a year.
