PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Over three inches of snow in Pittsburgh has forced hundreds of schools to close and has caused multiple accidents around the area Friday morning.

The snow started falling heavily around 4 a.m. and conditions quickly began to deteriorate.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. on Friday and the National Weather Service says the morning snow accounts for almost 25 percent of the total snow for the entire winter.

With the ❄️ this morning, this accounts for nearly 25% or 1/4 of the entire snowfall we have received, so far this winter in #Pittsburgh. Happy -- and⛄️ making today. #winter #snow

Places like the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium have closed for the day.

Higher elevations could experience more accumulation through he afternoon especially south and east of the city.

Snow showers will continue to linger throughout the afternoon with windy conditions and a high of 31.
