NORFOLK, Va. - A Pittsburgh native took part in Honoring the life and legacy of a female pioneer in Naval aviation last weekend in Maynardville, TN.Cmdr. Leslie Mintz, a Pittsburgh Native participated in the first ever all-female flyover on February 2 to honor the passing of a female naval aviation pioneer.
The "Missing Man Flyover" is a special flyover "honoring the service of aviators who have died serving their country."
Mintz was honoring retired Navy Captain Rosemary Mariner who passed away in late January after a long battle with cancer.
Mariner was the Navy's first female jet pilot.
In a statement Mintz said, "I chose naval aviation because I wanted to serve amongst the finest women and men in the fleet."
"The opportunity to fly jet airplanes was a life-long dream and I knew early on that I wanted to fly in the most demanding and challenging environments. I've had the opportunity to fly and serve with the most incredible Naval Aviators, and I am proud to stand on the shoulders of the giants that have come before me."
