PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Longtime KDKA Radio news anchor Bob Kopler died Tueday morning. He was 81.

He worked in Pittsburgh for over 40 years at several stations.


His last stop: KDKA where he anchored newscasts for 19 years, retiring in 2007.

Kopler joined the Marines in 1957 and served under former PA Rep. John Murtha who passed away in 2010.

Murtha spoke about Kopler after he announced his retirement from KDKA Radio.

"Bob Kopler epitomizes the citizen/soldier, when he was in our unit, he was one of the most squared away, most articular, hardest working, most dedicated Marines . . . and he continued that throughout his career," Murtha said.

"No one brought more passion to the newsroom," said KDKA Radio Morning Show host Larry Richert.

Richert adds that Kopler, who started his day in the newsroom at 1 a.m. every morning to prepare for his first newscast at 5 a.m.and was the last anchor to have a typewriter with him because "you never know", he used to say.

Kopler also spend time on WTAE Radio.

Perman Funeral Home says services will be private.

Bob Kopler is survived by his wife, Sandy and two sons.
