Nearly 1.5 million people are calling for the Ku Klux Klan to be declared illegal and considered a domestic terrorist group.

The Change.org petition will be sent to the U.S. Congress.

“The Ku Klux Klan is a white supremacist hate group with historic background of terrorism, including countless physical assaults and murders. The KKK is still active in certain parts of the country and has public rallies. Hate should not be a way to bring communities together, nor should it be allowed or tolerated,” said Karissa M. who started the petition

Another petition on Change.org wants President Donald Trump to declare the KKK a terrorist organization.

That petition currently has over 273,000 signatures.

Last week a man claiming to be a KKK leader in Virginia drove a truck into a crowd of protesters. Only minor injuries were reported.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has declared the KKK a hate group and quotes the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan’s website.

"Non-whites who reside in America should be expected to conduct themselves according to Christian principles and must recognize that race mixing is definitely wrong and out of the question. It will be a privilege to live under the authority of a compassionate White Christian government."

The center reports over 45 active KKK groups operating in the U.S. today, with one in Pennsylvania.

The Ku Klux Klan was originally formed after the Civil War in 1866 by a group of Confederate veterans in Tennessee and is not an illegal group in the county.

President Trump has tweeted that he wants ANTIFA to be declared a terrorist organization and claims that the group is behind much of the violence during protests related to the killing of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.
