(Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Newly released correspondence involving defrocked Washington, DC Cardinal Theodore McCarrick show the extent to which his successor, former Pittsburgh Bishop, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, was aware of sex abuse allegations against McCarrick.

The correspondence from 2008 to 2017, reveal McCarrick had been sanctioned under Pope Benedict and forbidden to travel.

Wuerl reportedly knew about the sanctions but did not enforce them as Cardinal.

McCarrick opposed a travel ban and sudden move to a monastery writing, it would probably raise a red flag in the media.

It wasn't until January of this year that Wuerl, who has also stepped down, admitted he suffered a lapse of memory about allegations against McCarrick.

The letters were revealed by McCarrick's former secretary Monsignor Anthony Figueiredo to CBS News.]
