PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Following comments made by Pennsylvania Education Secretary Pedro Rivera regarding the status of students returning to school next year in Pennsylvania, Wendy Bell spoke with PA House Speaker Mike Turzai.
“Schools need to be opened, safely, right after Labor Day,” Turzai said on Monday. “He will have nearly six months to put together plans with school superintendents. We all know that you are going to have to make some innovative changes to make it happen. You don’t gather in cafeterias. You have lunches prepared ahead of time. You’ll have social distancing in classrooms. You stagger arrival times. You stagger class times. This can be done. You just need to put a little thought into it.”
Schools can also use similar practices happening in hospitals, like taking temperatures before entering the building in order to keep everyone safe.
Turzai and Wendy also discussed how the administration’s “can’t accomplish” language negatively impacts Pennsylvanians.
“It’s so depressing. I said in my letter to the Secretary, you are not working to find solutions giving what’s in front of us. Instead of providing direction and even hope, his statements are fostering depression, anxiety, and hopelessness. That is not the way to govern or lead. “
“With innovation and common sense, all these activities can be done safety,” Turzai continued. “Kids can play softball and baseball…they can swim, they can sing, they can perform, they can do science tests in labs…”
