PITTSBURGH, PA (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Steel Valley School District will be closed on Wednesday, October 2nd for precautionary cleaning after suspected bed bugs were found inside two of the schools.

The district made the announcement on their website Tuesday:

"The Steel Valley School District will be closed on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.  We have decided to close the District in order to treat and clean all of our buildings after our recent cases of bed bugs.  While our High School and Middle School were treated this evening, many of our secondary students have siblings in our elementary schools.  To the fullest extent possible, we want to be able to reassure our students, their families and our staff that our buildings are safe and healthy places to learn and to work.

"We expect to resume normal operations on Thursday, October 3, 2019.  If that would change, we will notify our families, staff and community in a timely manner.  Thank you."

In a letter to the school district, Superintendent Edward Wehrer wrote that suspected bed bugs were found on Monday in a high school classroom and on Tuesday in a middle school student’s bookbag.

According to the letter, the school district has no information to indicate an active bed bug infestation.
