PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) It was announced today by CEO John Donahoe that Nike will recognize June 19, Juneteenth, as an annual paid holidy.
Juneteenth is a day that honors the end of slavery in the U.S. and is also known as Cel-Liberation Day, and sometimes noted as America's second Independence Day.
The call for making Juneteenth a company holiday comes at a time where racial tensions and the Black Lives Matter movement are at the forefront of the world.
Nike is also launching a diversity education program for their employees to teach against systemic racism.
Across most of the country the holiday is recognized as a day of remembrance or observance.
Juneteenth is yet to be recognized as a ceremonial holiday or day of observance by only three states across the nations, North and South Dakota and Hawaii.
Nike joins many other companies across the country that will begin to recognize Juneteenth as an official company holiday, including Twitter and Vox Media.
Both Twitter and Square are making #Juneteenth (June 19th) a company holiday in the US, forevermore. A day for celebration, education, and connection.https://t.co/xmR3fWMiRs
