HARRISBURG, Pa (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Wolf administration is awarding $10 million in grant money to develop COVID-19 vaccines, treatments and therapies.
In all, 23 projects will benefit from the funding. 12 of the projects are focused on a vaccine, five on therapies, five on treatments and one focused on infrastructure and innovations to fight coronavirus.
"We know that the only way we can get back to our normal lives is by developing a robust testing and tracing infrastructure combined with effective, safe and affordable treatments and vaccines," said Gov. Wolf. "The funding awarded today will jumpstart a number of promising projects that would help Pennsylvania overcome this devastating global pandemic, setting us on a path to recovery and protection both now and in the future."
Carnegie Mellon University is among the grant recipients. CMU will receive $643,000 to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 that is "safe, efficient, reliable, inexpensive, and pain-free."
Magee-Womens Research Institute and Foundation will receive more than $560,000 to develop a nasal spray treatment that would " prevent coronavirus infection."
The University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh-Center for Vaccine Research have been awarded a combined $1.6 million to develop a vaccine.
