HARRISBURG, PA (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - On Tuesday, Governor Tom Wolf revealed that food distributors in Pennsylvania will be receiving $50 million in aid funds for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farmers to Families Food Box program.

The $50 million is part of Pennsylvania’s share of $1.2 billion federal funding dedicated to helping the agricultural industry.

The funding will go to the purchasing of extra dairy and meat products from farmers whose markets were negatively affected by the coronavirus.

The distributors will work hand-in-hand with food banks and other charity groups to package the excess food into boxes and donate them to families in need.

“This vital funding will put fresh, nutritious food on Pennsylvanians’ tables and money in the pockets of our farmers,” Wolf said.

“The Wolf Administration has advocated for this and other targeted support for our farms, and we’re pleased that this funding will complement other dedicated state and federal funding to combat food waste and food insecurity in Pennsylvania.”
