HARRISBURG (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — County elder protective services are facing scrutiny over their handling of abuse complaints.
A summary of the state Inspector General report released this week outlines concerns of inadequate training and staffing.
Inspector General Bruce Beemer tells KDKA Radio the issues are leading to some of the state’s 52 county-level Area Agencies on Aging unable to respond to urgent reports properly.
“We had some real high, alarming numbers of cases that were not being reviewed in a timely fashion,” Beemer said.
“Whether there’s some sort of physical or other type of abuse going on, we have to really be in a position to get to them quickly.”
State and county officials say the findings are already being addressed.
Anyone who witnesses elder abuse should contact their local Area Agency on Aging.
