Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is $1 million available to small businesses and farmers through a grant program.

The Small Business Advantage grant program would give recipients the chance to upgrade systems or equipment that would help reduce their energy use or pollution. One new aspect of the grant program is giving farmers the opportunity to install solar pumping systems.

“Pennsylvania is committed to assisting those small business owners who want to become energy efficient, increase their profitability, and help the environment,” said DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell. “This funding will support projects designed to reduce operating costs and boost competitiveness, while simultaneously protecting the environment.”

Small business owners that have 100 or less employees are eligible to apply for the grant. Proposed projects would have to save those businesses at least $500 and reduce energy consumption or pollution expenses by 25 percent or more.

“We are excited to expand the program to help lower energy bills through the use of solar energy,” McDonnell said. “Encouraging businesses to embrace alternative energy projects helps clean our air, reduces greenhouse gases, and give small business owners a sense of satisfaction on making smart choices.”

Applications, which must be submitted through the states Single Application for Assistance website, will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis and are being accepted until April 21, 2021 or when all of the grant money has been allocated.
