HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Speaker of the House Mike Turzai wants to get Pennsylvania’s construction crews back to work.

His bill headed to committee would allow companies with COVID-19 mitigations protocols to resume work.

He told the KDKA Radio Morning News the governor’s shut down of all non-essential projects has contributed to record unemployment number.

“We’re going to have severe public health issues like family disintegration, increases alcohol and drug addition, higher prevalence of mental illness,” said Turzai. “Folks need purpose and they need hope and they need jobs to take care of themselves and their families.”

Turzai adds there are industry guidelines in place, and cites states that are allowing construction to continue during shutdowns.

Turzai fears the governor’s mitigation efforts could end up being more harmful than the coronavirus itself.
