PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — Before the end of the month, drivers without an EZPass will pay over $12 to cross the state line on Toll Route 66.
Next year, the rest of the turnpike will see toll hikes of six percent.
Those constant increases stem from billions in debt due to the $450 million the Turnpike Commission is required to pay to PennDOT each year.
Governor Tom Wolf tells Larry and John on KDKA Radio the system is not sustainable.
“What we have to figure out is, what is the best way to support and sustain highway construction in Pennsylvania, because we need that,” said Wolf. “We can’t keep doing that in large part on the back of turnpike drivers.”
The state legislature is responsible for changing funding requirements.
