PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) ― The CEO at Pittsburgh International Airport says the COVID-19 pandemic will mean delays for the new terminal.
Christina Cassotis tells KDKA Radio she is “confident” there will be delays in the $1.1 billion project, funded predominantly by airlines.
Site preparation was supposed to start in April.
Many of the 6,000 jobs supported by the airport itself have also been impacted by the declining health of the industry amid the outbreak, but Cassotis doesn't expect layoffs at the airport authority.
“We expect that that we will continue to operate and we will continue to maintain this facility for when the airline industry returns to normal,” Cassotis told KDKA Radio. “Or a new normal.”
Cassotis says the airport does not just provide jobs to the region.
“We are national critical infrastructure,” Cassotis said.
“We have two military bases here. Those runways and taxiways need to stay opened, they need to stay maintained.”
