PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – An outspoken survivor of the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida is endorsing Mayor Bill Peduto’s effort to pass new gun restrictions in the city of Pittsburgh. 18 year old David Hogg sat next to Peduto at a U.S. Conference of Mayors panel discussion in Washington, DC on reducing gun violence.
“We need more mayors like Peduto,” said Hogg. We need every one of you to stand up because, I guarantee you, they can go after one of us, they can go after a few of us, but they cannot go after every single mayor within the United States.”
Peduto said he is sharing Pittsburgh’s proposed legislation with mayor’s across the country.
“Seventy-seven other cities throughout this country that have all faced mass homicide in this century. That doesn’t even include Columbine,” said Peduto. He later told KDKA radio he had, “a very positive reaction.”
At a city council public hearing Thursday night, 57 people spoke out against the proposed bills. Forty-three were in favor. Council is expected to consider bill next month that would ban certain semi-automatic firearms, ammunition, and accessories within city limits and allow courts to remove weapons from people who pose an extreme risk to themselves or others.
