Earlier this week, 30 rest areas across Pennsylvania were closed at the direction of Governor Tom Wolf in an effort to slow the spread of the Coronavirus. Now, PennDOT is reopening 13 of those stops after safety concerns were raised.
“Every decision made has been in the interest of mitigating the spread of COVID-19 and we are constantly reevaluating our response,” said PennDOT Acting Secretary Yassmin Gramian, P.E. “That said, we also recognize the importance of freight movement and that drivers need access to rest areas.”
There will be five portable toilets are each location and they will be cleaned once a day. Electronic signs will be used to notifiy drivers as they approach and area that is open. There are no plans to open any indoor facilities at this time.
