Many unemployed workers in Pennsylvania will be getting a payment starting next week that they might not have expected as part of the Federal Lost Wages Assistance program.
The $300 a week payment could be distributed starting as soon as September 14.
The Pennsylvania Labor & Industry Secretary Jerry Oleksiak explained how the payments will be made to recipients. "The payments will be made in one lump sum for claim weeks beginning August 1st, so it's retroactive to August 1st through August 29th."
Oleksiak said Pennsylvania is authorized to pay out five weeks of benefits. "After that, we will need to re-apply for those funds and we've begun that process."
To be elegible for the weekly benefit, a person would have to have been partially or fully unemployed due to COVID-19. Most people already getting unemployment benefits are eligible for the extra money.
The federal benefit will run through December of this year or until funds are exhausted.
