PIAA Says Data Shows Sports Can Be Played Safely This Fall

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The association that governs high school sports in Pennsylvania has gathered data it says show sports can be played safely this fall.

The PIAA which governs high school sports in Pennsylvania is using the data to support moving ahead with high school games this fall. Associate Executive Director Melissa Nash Mertz tells the KDKA Radio Morning show,

"Over 30,000 students that had a pre-screening done there was about 14 or so that failed pre-screening due to an elevated temperature," said Mertz.

Of those, only four tested positive for COVID-19. The screening was done when students were not gathered together for classes.

"That's what's going to help us, I think help the board on Friday as they render their decision moving ahead with fall sports," added Mertz.

The PIAA board will vote on fall sports Friday.
