PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - In an effort to keep its safe and the community safe, The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is discouraging food drives until further notice.
Food Bank employees will spend more time packing food boxes, sorting large amounts of produce and heightening cleaning procedures.
“Every food drive donation that comes through our doors requires a staff or volunteer to sort, organize and repack,” said Lisa Scales, president and CEO of the Food Bank. “With our current temporary restriction of volunteers at our warehouse and the need to get food to our neighbors experiencing hunger in a timely and safe fashion, we are requesting monetary donations in lieu of food donations at this time.”
Donating money will give the Food Bank the ability to buy large amounts of food, reduce physical contact and “quickly re-distribute to those in need.
They add that for every $1 donated, the Food Bank can provide five meals for those in need.
