HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A bill before the state legislature would force pediatricians to treat unvaccinated children, sponsored by Representative Daryl Metcalfe.

Metcalfe spoke Tuesday morning at about the Informed Consent Protection Act:

“It’s a parent’s right to make that decision for their child,” said Metcalfe. “Our children don’t belong to the state. This is not communist Russia. This is the United States of America.”

The American Association of Pediatrics says doctors can suggest families seek care elsewhere if they do not follow the CDC vaccination schedule, stating unimmunized children put other patients at risk.

Health Ethics professional Dr. Alvin Moss also spoke at the  event seeking support for the Informed Consent Protection Act:

“In essence, pediatricians are saying ‘do what I say and vaccine your child or be discharged from my practice’, the American Academy of pediatrics approach eliminates the possibility of informed consent,” said Dr. Moss.

Representative Dan Frankel calls the bill "irresponsible" and is drafting legislation that would impose more requirements for non-medical vaccine exemptions, citing the current increase in Measles cases nationwide
