On Thursday, The San Antonio International Airport approved a new concessions agreement to bring food companies into one of the terminals.
District 1 City Councilman Roberto Treviño approved the motion on the basis that Chick-Fil-A be excluded due to the company's anti-LGBTQ behavior.
"This is a concession contract here at San Antonio International Airport, and we as a city council have the purview to understand what kind of concessionaires we're going to have at our airport," Treviño told KDKA Radio's Marty Griffin and Wendy Bell.
"It is a public facility and understanding who is in our public facility and what they may represent in a city like San Antonio is very important to us."
"A huge part of our LGBTQ community was very concerned that this was not reflective of our compassionate, San Antonio model," Treviño explained. "We have passed a non-discrimination ordinance and this is clearly under the purview of that non-discrimination ordinance."
Treviño told Marty and Wendy that Chick-Fil-A has contributed to "conversion therapy, which is violence against children, and lied about it." He could not provide the names of any conversion therapy organizations he referenced.
"One of the charities that Chick-Fil-A gives mightily to and believes in is the Salvation Army. Would the Salvation Army's goals align with yours and your cities?" Wendy asked Treviño.
"Again, I'm not here to talk about the Salvation Army," Treviño responded. "What I can tell you is our community, which has embraced the LGBTQ values and our nondiscrimination ordinance, which is discrimination towards any protected class, is something that we will not tolerate."
"Chick-Fil-A is not banned form the city; there are Chick-Fil-A’s all over the city. This is a public facility, this is the discretion of the city council and we exercised our discretion."
