PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – It was a long fought battle to get a grocery store in the Hill District, and now rumors are whirling around that the Shop 'n Save might be closing.
City Councilman Dan Lavelle tells KDKA Radio's Lynne Hayes-Freeland,
“I do not have a definitive closing date but we have known that the Shop ‘n Save has been struggling for some time now and I do believe at some point it will be imminent that it closes.”
Lavelle thinks a couple things have led to this including people having a hard time breaking their normal shopping patterns and poor management.
“I think as the store went on later in years due to what I just consider poor management the store never adjusted to the needs of the community and so many people within the community began using it almost as sort of a glorified convenience store that would stop there for little things but wouldn’t go there and do all of their shopping.”
Lavelle says he along, Rep. Jake Wheatley and the Hill House are actively working to ensure that it remains a grocery store moving forward; they are exploring all of their options.
The Dollar Bank located inside the grocery store will also close.
