MCKEES ROCKS, Pa. (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Students can no longer use their cell phones in Sto-Rox schools.

The district imposed a ban Monday.

Superintendent Frank Dalmas says some students cheat by taking pictures of tests, sending them to other students. Students have taken pictures of staff, posting them on social media with derogatory comments.

Students caught will a cell phone or similar electronic device will have it confiscated and it will not be returned to the student until a conference takes place with the student’s parent/guardian.

An offical with the district tells KDKA Radio while the ban is district wide, they really only have had a problem at the junior/senior high school

There are some exceptions. The district listed the following on their website.

The building administrator may grant approval for possession and use of an electronic device by a student for the following reasons:

  1. Health, safety or emergency reasons.
  2. An individualized education program
  3. Classroom or instructional-related activities.
  4. Other reasons determined appropriate by the building principal.

The building administrator may grant approval for possession and use of a telephone paging device/beeper by a student for the following reasons:

  1. Student is a member of a volunteer fire company, ambulance or rescue squad.
  2. Student has a need due to the medical condition of an immediate family member.
  3. Other reasons determined appropriate by the building principal.
