PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Dr. Ben Lawner, Allegheny Health Network Emergency Medicine Physician, joined KDKA Radio on Wednesday to tell listeners how dangerous this sub-zero weather can be.

“Sometimes the cold can trigger things like asthma; the worst thing is something called hypothermia,” Lawner said.

Hypothermia occurs when a person’s body begins to shut down after being exposed to freezing temperatures.

These problems can be avoided by wearing extra layers, hats, scarves, etc.

“When it’s cold like this, you can start experiencing effects with respect to frostbite in about 10-15 minutes,” Lawner added.

If someone feels confused or slow to respond, that’s a cause for concern and that individual should seek professional help.

Temperatures are expected to get better by the week’s end.
