PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A 1906 cornerstone and copper time capsule from the demolished Tree of Life Synagogue then Pittsburgh Play House in Oakland was opened Monday morning.

Inside the capsule were synagogue cards and documents, a Jewish calendar, several Pittsburgh newspapers a seashell and even a Heinz Pickle Pin.

Eric Lidgi, Jewish archives curator at Heinz History Center says they will preserve everything.

“The newspapers you expect,” said Lidgi. “I wish this was in a little better shape and hopefully we might be able to salvage it a little bit.”

Tree of Life Executive Director Barbara Feige was on hand to see it opened.

“I’m giddy . . . I find it very exciting, I’m a bit of a geek about this type of stuff,” said Feige. “I think this is fabulous . . . I’m the executive director, I want to know how much dues were, I want to know who didn’t pay their dues,”

As for the 1906 corner stone, it will eventually make its way to the current Tree of Life in Squirrel Hill as part of renovations following last year’s shooting.
