PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - US Steel is laying off thousands of employees and reducing operations after reporting a $391 million loss in the first quarter.
Layoff notices were sent to 6,500 employees, but not all of them will be laid off.
A blast furnace at Edgar Thomson plant will be idled, the Irwin facility will operate at reduced levels and coking times will be slowed at the Clairton works.
