DELMONT (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — The Westmoreland County Food Bank is preparing for its Summer Food Service Program, and is looking for the community's help.
The need for food is higher in the summer while children are not receiving school meals, and the WCFB says they are facing decreasing funds and supplies moving into the summer.
The Summer Food Service Program is now in its 37th year. The 8-week program provides free breakfasts and lunches to children at various sites throughout the county.
The program provided over 10,000 meals last summer, feeding about 300 children per day on average.
This summer, the program needs cleaning supplies such as garbage bags, paper towels, dish detergent, multi-purpose cleaner, liquid hand soap, hand sanitizer, and empty spray bottles for mixing sanitizing solution.
"It sounds odd to ask for garbage bags, but it is a requirement of the USDA that these items be at the sites for food safety," said WCFB Director of Programs Michelle Heller.
"In years past, we had a donor provide garbage bags, but that source is not available to us any longer."
Garbage bags must be 32-gallon heavy-duty bags. They need about 200 30-count boxes to be ready for the upcoming season.
