PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A new report released on Wednesday indicates that the threat of a workplace shooting is growing across the country.

The American Society of Safety Professionals says their report highlights the need for a safety plan. Report Committee Chair Brian Hammer tells KDKA Radio's Larry and John the FBI statistics speak for themselves.

“These incidents increased over 50% between 2016 and 2017. More importantly, the deaths increased between those same time frames up to three times the highest count ever,” Hammer said.

He recommends employers to train their employee’s on how to respond to an armed assailant, and increasing workplace security measures.

“We want to make sure employees understand how to recognize the first signs of potential threats. Not every case is going to be one where it’s somebody they don’t know, More often than not it will be somebody they do know,” Hammer explains.

If a training protocol is ingrained in to an employee on a consistent basis, they will hopefully be able to execute that plan.
