Alto Reed, the longtime saxophonist in the Silver Bullet Band, passed away at the age of 72 in December 2020 following a battle with colon cancer. Bob Seger opened up in a recent interview about his final conversation with Reed and admitted his death has made him question whether or not he wants to go back out on the road again.
"I listened really hard to him," Seger said of their final phone call. "And he said 'how grateful I am for my wonderful life.' I thought that was so beautiful, and I thought he was so brave. I don't think I could go out (on tour) without him."
Seger and Reed had been making music together since the early 1970s and were both original members of the Silver Bullet Band lineup, appearing on 14 studio albums and two live sets together.
“Over the years, his passion for music, life and new adventures never diminished,” Seger said in a statement at the time of Reed’s passing. “We loved him like a brother and will miss [him] forever.”
Bob Seger wrapped up his Roll Me Away Tour with the Silver Bullet Band in 2019 as the final show took place at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on November 1. The tour was billed as his farewell tour, but fans have been holding out hope that he may hit the road once again. For Seger, that doesn’t seem like a reality at this point, as he’s content with where he’s at.
"You know, I've had a great life, oh my goodness," Seger said. "I loved what I did. Never worked a day in my life, really. The hard parts were sleeping in hotels, having rotten food."
