PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - For the third week in a row, Disney's Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings sits atop the box office. Pulling in an impressive $21.7 million during a traditionally slow September season, the latest MCU success is poised to surpass Black Widow as the #1 film during the last year and a half of the pandemic plagued period. Last week's newcomers, Cry Macho and Copshop crawled through their opening week with a paltry $7.2 million combined.
Hope is running high as Hollywood turns its eyes to the fall season. The Eyes of Tammy Faye expands this week and Dear Evan Hanson makes its big screen debut as a Broadway hit crossover. Venom: Let There Be Carnage, The Addams Family 2 and The Many Saints of Newark are all set to open next week and promise to give the box office a needed boost.
Dear Evan Hanson (PG-13)
Starring - Ben Platt, Julianne Moore and Amy Adams
Dear Evan Hanson was a six-time Tony and Grammy award winning Broadway hit. The 2015 musical starring Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect) as the title character took the stage by storm and is now attempting to sing at the box office. Platt reprises his role with the addition of sensational Amy Adams and Julianne Moore. Pittsburgh's Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) takes the controls in a game effort to bring the mood and music to the big screen. Platt is the title character, a high school senior with Social Anxiety Disorder and his journey of self-discovery and acceptance following the suicide of a fellow classmate. Tune in Friday morning as I talk to KDKA's Larry and Kevin about Dear Evan Hanson.
