Photos: Airport Releases Concept Photos For New Terminal

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - We’re getting a better idea of what the new and updated airport is going to look like.
On Tuesday Pittsburgh International released more concept designs for the $1.1 Billion terminal modernization project.
“If you had said five years ago, ‘You’re going to be building a new terminal, breaking ground on a world-leading additive manufacturing campus, and building a microgrid,’ I would have said, ‘Are you kidding? We’re just trying to bring in more airline service,’” said Airport CEO Christian Cassotis.
The new terminal, to be built between the C and D Concourses, features a rolling roof line designed by architect Luis Vidal.
“The combination of nature, technology, and community form the DNA of the region and that should be reflected in the structure of the building to enhance the experience for all users and leave a memorable impression,” said Vidal last February.
The design has two levels, departing passengers on the upper story with airline check-in and security. Arriving passengers on the lower level with a meet and greet area and baggage.
The terminal will also have an observation deck for visitors to watch planes arrive and depart.
Other design concepts include an expanded TSA checkpoint, shorter walking distances for passengers and visitors, indoor and outdoor green plazas, and additional space for concessions, artwork, and other amenities.
Groundbreaking is planned for late spring.
Airport spokesperson Bob Kerlik tells KDKA radio they “have completed the schematic and design development phases, and we’re now at 60% design.”
The Terminal Modernization Program is part of a five-year plan Smart Plan Forward.
“The new strategy leads with dual imperatives of Air Service Development and Safety and Security, followed by key initiatives of Smarter Technology, Smarter Development, Smarter Cargo, Smarter Workforce and a Smarter Terminal,” a release from the airport said.
The new terminal is expected to be completed by 2023.
