(WWJ) – June is Pride Month – a chance for the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate the progress that’s been made and continue to raise awareness for their causes.

This month, you’ll likely notice a lot of rainbow flags flying in neighborhoods, draped in storefronts and just about everywhere you look on social media. For many, it’s a way of showing support.

But it’s also become a chance for companies and other organizations to cash in on that support with merchandise, and oftentimes empty words. In a new Daily J podcast, WWJ’s Zach Clark has the details on the risks of “rainbow capitalism.”

He also looks at what some groups are doing to combat “cynical” rainbow capitalism, including the Northern Guard Supporters – the supporter group of Detroit City FC – which is holding a “prideraiser” this month.

The group is collecting pledges for each home goal scored during five games in June by the men’s and women’s team, and connecting fans who make pledges directly with a local organization.
