President Joe Biden is throwing his support behind Gov. Gavin Newsom as the first-term California Democrat faces a campaign to recall him.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tweeted the president's backing of the state's beleaguered leader Tuesday afternoon, saying Biden shares "a commitment with the governor on a range of issues."

Those backing the recall effort said they've collected 1.3 million signatures to place the measure on the November ballot. In total, they hope to collect to two million signatures by the March 17 deadline.

They'll need to turn in 1.5 valid signatures.

Two major Republican challengers, Kevin Faulconer and John Cox, have already announced their intentions to oppose Gov. Newsom, whether in a potential recall election this November or the general election in 2022.
