Health Department confirms measles case in Allegheny County

Individual was at the Target on McKnight Rd. last week

Monday Headlines

Pittsburgh's Headlines: October 5, 2026

The County Health Department says an Allegheny County resident has tested positive for measles.

Officials say the infected person is an unvaccinated child under 18 and is at home recovering.

No one was exposed inside of a school, but the Health Department says “People who visited the Target at 9805 McKnight Rd (Pine Creek Shopping Center), on Thursday, October 1 between 3:45 PM – 5:45 PM may have been exposed to this individual.”

Anyone who is unvaccinated again measles and was at the Target on McKnight Road at that time should call their doctor and to not go directly to a healthcare facility without calling first.

“Symptoms to watch for include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a rash that starts on the head or face and spreads downward,” says the ACHD. “Symptoms can start 7 to 21 days after exposure. An individual with measles can spread the virus to others four days before and four days after the rash begins.”

It was reported that two people at a UPMC facility in August tested positive for measles, but it was later clarified that those individuals are not residents of Allegheny County.

Monday’s case is the first reported of a person living in Allegheny County.

The number of measles cases in Pennsylvania this year has now surpassed 1,000.

The PA Health Department says 27 new cases were reported over the weekend.

The number of measles-related deaths is still at five.

The number of hospitalizations from this year's outbreak is up by three to 198.
