Allegheny County has its first positive rabies test in an animal for 2021 - a raccoon from Duquesne Heights.
The Health Department says the raccoon was reported to an animal rescue organization.
The rabies virus is transmitted through an animal bite or scratch and can be fatal if left untreated. Anyone that has been bitten, scratched or exposed to saliva of an animal should wash the affected area and seek medical attention immediately.
Anyone who sees any odd behavior in animals should contact animal control, police or the Game Commission.
