In this era of COVID-19, there continues to be a critical need for blood. The American Red Cross nationally announced that this is a crisis.
Kristin Lane of Vitalant says the need in Western Pennsylvania is just as critical.
“We have reached a new all-time low with regard to blood donors.”
She told Larry Richert on the NewsRadio KDKA Morning Show that for the past 10 years, they had only been getting about half the number of blood donors they need to provide blood to patients. However, now it’s only getting worse.
“We have omicron variant. We have the pandemic. We have these record-cold weather levels, so many things that are preventing people from donating blood,” Lane said.
Donors can go to their website at vitalant.org and make an appointment.
