Another independently-owned Pittsburgh-area pharmacy closing

Yet another independently-owned pharmacy is closing.

McKeesport's Ayres Drug Store is the latest pharmacy to call it a day.

On Facebook, the store announced that last Friday would be its last day it would fill prescriptions.

Pharmacist Chuck Traeger decided to retire after 58 years as a pharmacist, opting not to renew his license because it was no longer profitable.

He added medication costs and insurance companies are killing independent pharmacies.

Traeger had owned the store since 1960.

Customers are being referred to Hayden's Pharmacy in Youngwood, which is about a half hour drive away.

Last week came news that Stanton Negley Pharmacy would soon be closing.

Many communities are still struggling to fill the void after Rite-Aid began closing its stores two months ago.
