Michigan-based Meijer confirms it is has started to buy land in Western Pennsylvania.
In a statement released to KDKA Radio, a spokesperson for Meijer said:
Building on our success in Northeast Ohio and the amazing response we’ve received from those communities, we have started acquiring properties in Western Pennsylvania.
While there is no definitive timeline for the opening of new stores on these properties, we’re excited about the prospect of bringing our quality products and exceptional shopping experience to customers throughout Western Pennsylvania.
Our expansion into this market reflects our commitment to serving more customers with fresh, affordable groceries, one-stop shopping, and outstanding service. We look forward to introducing ourselves to these communities and are committed to being an active and engaged neighbor.
There is no word on where or when those locations are planning to open.
Meijer was founded 90 years ago in Greenville, Michigan and operates nearly 260 stores, mainly in the Midwest.
In addition to groceries, Meijer also sells electronics, outdoor items, clothing, shoes and more.
The closest Meijer location to Pittsburgh is currently about an hour away in Boardman, Ohio.
The news of Meijer looking at Western PA comes a week after it was reported that East Coast grocery chain Wegmans could be looking at opening a location in the Cranberry area.
In addition to Wegmans, Meijer will be competing with other grocery companies Giant Eagle, Kuhn's, Aldi, Shop ‘n Save, Walmart, Target, Costco, BJs, Trader Joe's and more.
