Momentum appears to be growing for a proposed statewide student cell phone ban in Pennsylvania.
A bill moving through the House would mandate public school students to secure their cellphones and not be granted access to it until the end of the school day.
State Representative Mandy Steele tells the Big K Morning Show that more people are recognizing how problematic cell phones be in the classroom.
“Academic scores are plummeting but it’s also their mental and physical health so, we see hospital admissions for kids way up, obesity is up, anxiety is up, depression is up, suicide . . . is way up,” said Rep. Steele.
Steele says it usually takes about two weeks for students to start to understand the benefits of getting rid of cell phones during the school day.
The bi-partisan legislation mandates that students secure their phones for the entire school day, only allowing access during emergencies or pre-approved medical needs.
She said she's hopeful that her bill will come up for a vote before the end of this legislative session.
