Police in Latrobe are investigating after they say someone set fire to a storage shed that held thousands of dollars worth of Little League equipment Monday.
The shed in Legion Keener Park was a donation, according to Latrobe Little League president John Russo. He said the equipment inside cost over $4,000.
"I was so mad," he said. "Why would you do that to the kids? That's who is going to get hurt, ultimately, in this."
Latrobe Police say they were called to the park around 12:35 Monday morning for a possible structure fire. When they arrived, the shed was fully engulfed. The shed and the contents inside are a total loss.
The Latrobe Little League season is scheduled to start at the end of May.
Thanks to the overwhelming community response, Russo believes they'll have the equipment replaced in time to start the season as scheduled.
"I've been getting e-mails left and right from businesses, individuals, phone calls," he said. "It's pretty impressive the outpouring right now is just overwhelming."
Russo says the best way to help is with a donation to their program. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 202, Latrobe, PA 15650.
Police say an anonymous donor is offering $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible.
