New bill would strengthen the bail process in Pennsylvania

Thursday headlines

Pittsburgh's Headlines: October 15, 2026

A new bill has been proposed to strengthen the bail process involving offenders with prior violent convictions.

Republican state representatives Jeremy Shaffer, Natalie Mihalek, Valerie Gayods, Jason Orititay and Andrew Kuzma are co-sponsoring legislation following the murder of Dr. Idris Evans in Edgewood.

House Bill 2856 requires consideration of prior violent convictions and other criminality when a decision is made regarding bail.

There is also a plan to introduce legislation to require complete and current criminal history reports to be provided to judges or magistrates before bail is set or modified.

The lawmakers cited other violent murders committed in Allegheny County at the hands of violent offenders.

They said the goal is to ensure cases like this never happen again.
