The Beaver Area School District says board member Luke Berardelli has resigned his position.
That's according to a letter sent to parents obtained by KDKA Radio.
At a contentious school board meeting Monday night, several of his colleagues and members of the public called for him to step down after a controversial social media post he made regarding the Lindsay Clancy trial.
The jury deadlocked with the majority in favor of finding Clancy not criminally responsible for killing her three children.
Critics felt the comments were anti-Muslim and anti-woman.
In his post, Berardelli said: "maybe the Islamic faith is the correct way to go considering they give women zero rights at all."
He defended himself at the board meeting, saying he was being sarcastic and using hyperbole to make a point about extremism.
Superintendent Dr. Sean Aiken said in a letter to parents the school board will “take formal action” to accept the resignation at the next board meeting and begin the process of filling the seat.
