It’s a very happy birthday for a local legend. The Big Mac!
While McDonald’s may have started Illinois, its most-popular sandwich began in Pittsburgh.
The Big Mac is actually celebrated on its creator’s birthday, Jim Delligatti, who created the world-famous burger in 1967.
The two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese pickles, onions and sesame seed bun sandwiches were tested at Delligatti’s Uniontown McDonald’s location before spreading to other locations in the Pittsburgh area.
It went nationwide in 1968.
Today, around 550 million Big Macs are sold every year and in 100 countries around the globe.
Friday was declared Big Mac Day in Allegheny County in honor of the celebration.
You can celebrate Delligatti’s birthday now until August 11 with a Big Mac for just $2. You can only get the offer on the MyMcDonald’s Rewards app.
